Nursing Homes - Who We Are

SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana unites nursing home workers throughout Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Together, we strive to give working men and women a voice on the job and in their communities. Our members’ goals are to improve their quality of life, economic resources, benefits for their families and to gain respect on the job through organizing and political action.
SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana nursing home workers have been going in a new, more active direction since 2004. Inspired by Andy Stern’s vision of transformer the labor movement to an open, progressive engine for change, the members dug in and made major improvements, including:
- Tripling the force of stewards and worksite leaders in nursing homes;
- Launching and developing a union-run member education and training program; and
- Workers are active in all bargaining committees—leading to some of the biggest contract victories for nursing homes in the country.
Nursing home workers’ victories paved the way to unite even more workers. In the past two years, nearly 2,000 new nursing home health care workers have joined SEIU — growing our union to 10,000 members strong.
We are also part of the 1,000,000-member strong SEIU Healthcare — and the 2,000,000 member strong SEIU International union. The nursing home workers in SEIU Healthcare, like all SEIU members, are also involved in many more wide ranging community building efforts, too. They are active in campaigns to improve our education, health care, housing and working family wage policies. They know building better communities makes us all stronger — and they act on that knowledge.
